MEXICO – San Diego Padres prospect Jesus Lopez went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored as the first-place Guasave Algodoneros outslugged the Culiacan Tomateros, 9-7,in Mexican Pacific League.
Guasave scored 10 runs from the second to fourth innings to grab a commanding lead with Francisco Mendez and Mario Valenzuela smacking home runs in a 16-hit offensive eruption. Mendez reached base four times on two hits and a pair of walks, and collected three RBIs.
Sergio Mora (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Spike Lundberg with four solid innings out of the bullpen. Culiacan starter Alfredo García (1-1) was pinned with the loss.
Mazatlan 2, Mochis 1
Alfonso Sanchez combined with three relievers on a five-hitter as the Mazatlan Venados edged the Mochis Caneros in a low-scoring battle.
Mazatlan opened the scoring in the first when American Steve Pearce’s sacrifice fly brought home Roberto Saucedo for an early 1-0 lead. But Mochis tied the score 1-all in the third on Justin Christian’s RBI single before the Venados plated the eventual game-winner on César Osuna’s hit.
Alfonso Sánchez (1-0) allowed a run and four hits over five inning to notch the win while closer José Cobos recorded his first save. Tampa Bay Rays prospect Heath Phillips (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings in a losing effort for Mochis.
Mexicali 3, Obregon 2
Former Major Leaguer Oscar Robles’ three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning pushed the Mexicali Aguilas past the Obregon Yaquis in a dramatic comeback victory.
Veteran pitcher Ignacio Flores (1-1) came out of the bullpen to get the win and San Francisco Giants prospect Sergio Romo earned his third save. Yaquis reliever Adrián Ramírez (0-2) was charged with the setback.
Braves farmhand Jason Phillips had two hits and an RBI in a losing cause.
Hermosillo 8, Navojoa 4
Former Major Leaguer Erubiel Durazo hit two home runs to lead Hermosillo to the road win over Navojoa. Durazo connected for his third and fourth homers in the young winter ball season.
Luis Alfonso García also homered for the visitors and rookie hurler Juan Pablo Menchaca (1-0) notched the win. Navojoa relief pitcher Azael Álvarez (1-1) was saddled with the loss.
