DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Chicago Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol suffered a swollen head in a car accident on Tuesday morning in Santo Dominigo, Dominican Republic.

The right-hander had just arrived in his native country in the Caribbean when a truck hit the vehicle that carried Marmol and two friends near his hometown of Bonoa.

Marmol said through an email that the only injuries he suffered was a cut to his forehead which required seven stitches.

The All-Star pitcher went 2-4 this season with a 2.68 ERA in 82 games.

Yankees Rivera Has Shoulder Surgery

USA - New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera underwent surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday and will be on the shelf for three months.

The 38-year-old had a calcified joint on the top of his throwing shoulder shaved by Dr. David Altchek, who is the New York Mets medical director. Altchek operated on Yankees catcher Jorge Posada’s shoulder last summer.

Rivera, who saved 39 games this season with a 1.40 ERA, will resume throwing in three months and should be ready for spring training.

Hafner Might Need Shoulder Surgery

USA - Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner’s strained shoulder has failed to improve and may need right shoulder surgery during the winter.

Hafner went on the disabled list for three months after tests showed the power hitter had lost all the strength in his shoulder. The left-handed hitting slugger, who averaged 32 homers and 108 RBIs the previous four seasons, finished this season batting .197 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 57 games.
