JAPAN - Malaika Underwood homered and had four RBIs and the United States remained undefeated at the Women’s Baseball World Cup with a 11-1 rout over previously unbeaten Australia on Tuesday in Pool A action.
The American second baseman also belted a triple and scored twice for the two-time defending champions. Veronica Alvarez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Lillian Jacobson had two hits and drove home a pair of runs to help the U.S.improve to 3-0.
Martina Sementelli (1-0) tossed five strong innings giving up a run on four hits to earn the win and Keri LeMasters worked the final inning while posting two strikeouts to finish off the win.
Jacinda Barclay (0-1) started for Australia which used four different pitchers in an attempt to slow down the potent American lineup. Third baseman Christina Kreppold went 1-for-3 with an RBI double for the Aussies (2-1).
Japan Pounds Hong Kong
Japan unleashed a 20-hit attack that included a pair of home runs to rout Hong Kong 24-1 on Tuesday and remain perfect with a 3-0 record in Pool B.
First baseman Natsumi Nakano enjoyed a sizzling day at the plate going 4-for-5 with a homer, four runs scored, and five RBIs. Tomomi Takashima also went deep and scored four times. Miki Atsugase, Yukiko Kon and Yui Oyama all had three hits apiece for the tournament hosts.
Japanese starter Mika Konishi (1-0) threw three scoreless innings allowing one hit while fanning seven to pick up the win. Wun Wei Fong (0-1) was saddled with the setback after surrendering eight runs in only two innings.
Hong Kong third baseman Woon Yee Cheuk collected the only two hits for her team, including a triple, and scored the lone run for the Chinese-controlled island nation.
Canada Trounces Korea
The Canadians scored early and often chasing Korean starter Su Jung Park in the first inning and coasted to a 15-0 win to claim their second victory at the World Cup.
Ashley Stephenson, Amanda Asay and Megan Cornelssen each collected two hits apiece for Canada (2-1). Stephenson also scored three runs and Asay had four RBis.
Marie Trembly started for Canada and surrendered a hit and three walks before handing the ball over to reliever Melanie Anctil (1-0) who tossed the final two innings to register the win. Park (0-1) failed to record an out while giving up seven runs to get pinned with the loss.
Taiwan Blanks India
Yu-Ying Tseng and two relievers combined on a no-hit shutout and Taiwan captured their first victory at the World Cup with a 6-0 win over India. The win improved Taiwan’s record to 1-2 while India fell to 0-3.
Tseng (1-0) walked one and struck out two in four solid innings before giving way to Ya-Ling Su who threw two innings while allowing a pair of walks. Pei-Hsuan Chou pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to seal the win.
Taiwanese catcher Chih-Hsuan Sung went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs while second baseman Pey-Yu Chou turned in a 2-for-4 effort that included a triple.
Devi Irengbam (0-1) was charged with the loss after yielding six runs on seven hits in five innings.
