USA - Former Kentucky pitcher Greg Dombrowski, the UK school record-holder for career winning percentage, has signed a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds, it was announced Friday.
Dombrowski, who wrapped up a historic four-year career with a win in the NCAA Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., finished with a staggering 23-5 career record and a 3.86 ERA in 282 career innings. The right-hander earned a 6-1 record and a 4.10 ERA in 2008, working 79 innings with 15 starts, striking out 58.
A crafty, sinker-baller, Dombrowski appeared in 62 games with 46 starts during his four years, toiling four complete games and one complete-game shutout. Dombrowski’s 23 career wins marks the second-most in UK history.
As a sophomore, Dombrowski posted a career year, helping lead UK to its first ever Southeastern Conference Championship, going 10-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 2006, including a complete-game performance vs. Notre Dame in an elimination game in the NCAA Lexington Regional.
Dombrowski marks the school-record seventh player from the 2008 Wildcats to sign a professional contract (Sawyer Carroll, Scott Green, Collin Cowgill, Andrew Albers, Ryan Wilkes and Tyler Howe), equaling seven players who signed following the 2006 campaign.
The Rome, N.Y. native will report to the Reds Gulf Coast Rookie League affiliate, the GCL Reds, in Sarasota, Florida.
