USA – Three returning UT Arlington baseball players – and two incoming Mavericks – enjoyed success on the diamond this summer competing in various collegiate baseball leagues around the country.

Rett Varner – Sophomore – RHP – Coppell Copperheads (Texas Collegiate League)
Varner completed a stellar summer leading the Copperheads in victories (4), innings pitched (47) and strikeouts (42). He ranked in three top five categories in the TCL, and he allowed opponents to bat just .203 against him while recording a 3.26 ERA in eight starts on the mound.

Tim Steggall – Junior (transfer from Central Arizona) – OF/INF – Seattle Studs (Pacific International League)
Steggall helped lead the Seattle Studs to its best finish at the National Baseball Congress World Series with a second-place finish and 6-2 record in the two-week tournament. The Studs lost in the championship game, 2-0, to the Santa Barbara Foresters last Friday. Steggall tallied six hits, seven runs, a double, a triple and two RBI in the tournament. On the season, Steggall batted .268 with four doubles, two triples, a home run and 16 RBI. He posted 43 putouts and eight assists defensively, while not committing an error.

Jason Mitchell – Junior (transfer from Central Arizona) – RHP – Santa Maria Indians (California Collegiate League)
Mitchell finished the summer as one of the top pitchers in the California Collegiate League, as the 6-foot-2 righty from Phoenix led the league going 6-0 and finished second with a 1.47 ERA. He finished second in league voting for the Most Outstanding Player award, ranked fourth in the Best Breaking Ball category and received the second most votes for All-League Starting Pitchers. Mitchell tallied 46 strikeouts, walked 18 batters and allowed only 13 runs in 43 innings.

Ryan Davis – Senior – INF – Southern California Fire (Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association)
Davis finished his season going 8-for-18 (.444) with three runs scored, a double and four RBI in four games at the NBC Tournament. Davis and the Fire went 2-2, defeating the Oklahoma A’s and Hays Larks. Davis’ .444 batting average ranked tied for sixth among all players at the NBC Tournament. Midway through the season Davis was batting .389 with 10 RBI. He finished the season being named to the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association Western Division All-Star team as an infielder/catcher. (California Fire end of the season statistics were unavailable).

Jeff Edlefsen – Senior – LHP – Rochester Honkers (Northwoods League)
Edlefsen, a mid-summer pick up by Rochester, proved to be a front of the line starter for the Honkers in the final month of the season. Edlefsen threw three complete games, which led the Honkers and tied for the league lead, while making only six starts. The lefty posted a 2-4 record with a 3.92 ERA in 39 innings pitched.
