Mexico - The Monterrey Sultanes clubbed four late home runs to pull away from the Saltillo Saraperos and claim a 9-3 win in first round Mexican League playoff action this past Tuesday night.
Edgar Quintero’s two-run blast in the sixth snapped a 2-2 tie before AgustÃn Murillo and Erubiel Durazo added solo shots the following inning to put Monterrey up for good, 6-3. Luis A. Garcia’s solo drive highlighted a three-run eighth to make a winner of Alfredo Simon.
Simon, who went 7-2 with a 2.67 ERA this past season, scattered three runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings to give the Sultanes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Rafael Diaz was handed the setback after lasting 5.1 innings and surrendering four runs and seven hits. Diaz finished the regular season 4-2 with a 3.44 ERA.
In other first round playoff action from Mexico, the Yucatan Leones nipped the Quintana Roo Tigres, 4-3, while the Mexico Rojos Diablos topped the Campeche Piratas,5-3.
