AUSTRIA - Paul Astl turned in a masterful outing and the Schwaz Tigers broke open a tight contest with four late runs to claim a 5-2 win over the Superfund Wanderers on Saturday in Austrian Baseball League action.
The Wanderers rebounded to win the second game to salvage a split of the doubleheader.
Although Astl was dominating the Superfund lineup the Tigers ace found himself trailing 2-1 until Schwaz tagged reliever Johannes Godler in the bottom of the eighth for four runs.
The Wanderers batted around in the second to grab a 6-1 lead and were comfortably ahead 16-8 when the Tigers were left a man short when a player was thrown out of the game for arguing with an umpire. The game was abruptly over as Schwaz were left with only eight players and Superfund was awarded the win with the official final score being 9-0.
Cubs Split With Vienna
Moritz Hackl cracked a game-tying three-run shot with two outs in the ninth and he Stock City Cubs stunned the Vienna Metrostars 8-7 in 10 innings on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Metrostars regrouped to trounce the Cubs 16-8 in the finale.
Hackl’s surprising drive sent the game into extra-innings where Vienna went up, again, 7-6 before Stock City’s Rene Lachinger’s RBI single capped an exciting win minus several injured players.
Vienna took the second game in dominating fashion as Cubs starter Harry Kainz, battling flu-like symptoms, had a short stint on the mound as reliever Mark Brunnthaler was forced to take the hill with the Metrostars holding a 6-0 cushion en route to the lopsided win.
