Heidenheim Heideköpfe Sweep Regensburg Legionaere

The Heidenheim Heideköpfe swept past The Regensburg Legionaere in a pair of games this past weekend to move into first-place in the South Division in German Baseball League action.

The Legionaere dropped the first game 7-4 to Heidenheim even though Coach Martin Helmig’s squad outhit the Heideköpfe 10 to 7. Heidenheim scored a trio of runs in the first and fourth innings to take a lead it would never relinquish.

Peter Dankerl picked up the win while Marcus Winkler was solid out of the bullpen to record the save. Regensburg starter Martin Almstetter was saddled with the setback.

Former Major Leaguer Mike Hartley, who also coaches the Heideköpfe, took the mound in the second contest and pitched his team to a 7-0 win. Craig Crow, a former minor league prospect with the Texas Rangers, was tagged with the loss.Heidenheim improved to 19-5 on the season while Regensburg saw its card fall to 17-5.

In other South Division matchups this past weekend, the Mannheim Tornados (14-10) captured a pair of key wins (7-2 and 5-1) over the Saarlouis Hornets (11-15) and the Gauting Indians (8-14) beat the Neuenburg Atomics (4-22) twice, 9-6 and 10-4. The Haar Disciples (10-14) stomped the Mainz Athletics (13-11) in the first game 13-5 before dropping the second contest, 3-2.

The North Division featured all sweeps as the top four clubs all registered a pair of wins. The top-ranked Solingen Alligators Alligators (22-1) dumped the Dortmund Wanderers (12-14) by the scores of 5-0 and 8-3 while the Paderborn Untouchables (21-3) roughed up the Neunkirchen Nightmare (4-22) two times, 17-4 and 36-4.

Other division action saw the Bonn Capitals (13-12) roll past the Hannover Regents (6-19) twice, 4-1 and 11-2, and the Cologne Cardinals (13-10) knocking off the HSV Stealers (7-17) in convicing fashion, 9-1 and 9-3.
